Bonsai Unit began in a shared flat somewhere in Hertfordshire, UK. Who started it? Well it’s a bit of a mystery... kind of like Banksy. Nobody knows exactly who or how many people are behind Bonsai Unit, so let’s just roll with “we” - for now - you know, to keep it simple.
Imagine a bonsai-loving flat-dweller decided to experiment with growing bonsai, all while navigating the tight spaces of a flat. It all kicked off with a Chinese Elm, a classic! Then came a maple—picked up from a nursery—with big dreams of growing bonsai from cuttings. But patience isn’t exactly our strong suit (another reason to practise bonsai actually) and waiting through a sleepy maple winter felt like forever.
So, to keep things lively, we added a tiny Itoigawa Juniper seedling (which we aim to grow for the next 10-20 years into a GIANT juniper) and a 28cm Itoigawa Juniper for some hands-on bonsai styling fun. Before we knew it, the balcony and living room started filling up with little trees, and we’re not stopping anytime soon. If our flatmate hasn’t kicked us out yet, we must be doing something right.
Speaking of the Flatmate, they’re kind of a saint. Sharing space with a bonsai-obsessed crew isn’t for the faint-hearted. We’re constantly brainstorming wild storage hacks to fit more trees without sparking a flatmate meltdown. But hey, we’re all friends here... (P.S. If you spot them blurred out in the background of a photo, don’t snitch.)
Our mission? To see just how far we can push the limits of bonsai-growing in a small space while keeping the peace at home. We’re learning as we go and sharing the ups, downs, and happy accidents with you.
So, welcome to Bonsai Unit—where flat-dwellers, tree-lovers, and small-space experimenters unite. Follow us on the gram, join our growing community, and let’s turn this bonsai experiment into something epic.
Catch you soon!
